Vulcan Energy secures $186m German govt grants

The news: Vulcan Energy has received approval for two grants worth about €104 million ($186 million) to support ambitions to build industrial-scale lithium production and processing from German governments.

The context: The two grants are backed by the German federal government as well as the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.

It will support lithium raw materials production at Vuclan’s geothermal extraction plant in Landau, Rhineland-Palatinate as well as a lithium hydroxide processing part at the central lithium plant in Frankfurt, Hesse.

These grants are part of Vulcan’s clean lithium for battery cell production funding project under the Phase One Lionheart geothermal energy and lithium production project.

Disbursement of funds is expected pro rata over 36 months following eligible expenditure from October 2025.

Disbursement is subject to finalisation of the overall project financing package by 1 September 2025, commencing construction by January 2026 and planned completion of the Raw Materials Fund equity investment by 31 March 2026.
