Warner Bros Discovery to launch Max with Foxtel partnership
The news: Warner Bros Discovery will launch its streaming platform Max as a standalone app in Australia at the end of next month, alongside a new partnership with Foxtel.
The context: WBD announced on Wednesday that its highly anticipated Max streaming platform would launch in the Australian market on 31 March, bringing to an end months of speculation across the local media and entertainment industries.
The launch will see the Max platform available direct-to-consumer in Australia, and in partnership with Foxtel, where the Max app will be made available to the pay TV operator’s customers at no additional cost, WBD said on Wednesday. The company’s streaming aggregation product, Hubbl, will also carry the new service.
Max will become the new home of HBO hit shows including The Last of Us and Euphoria from the end of next month. The platform will also host a swath of high-value Hollywood property including the DC Universe, Harry Potter and Discovery.
The platform will launch with multiple subscription tiers next month, the company said. It will offer premium, standard, and ad-supported tiers, with further details on features and pricing set to be revealed in the coming weeks.
What they said: “We’ve been clear that the globalisation of Max is a top priority, and Australia represents one of our biggest new markets and a significant opportunity to delight even more fans with the incredible stories told by our iconic brands,” WBD’s CEO and president of global streaming, JB Perrette, said in a statement.
“Combining an unrivalled breadth of high-quality content, legendary franchises and a strong product experience, Australians can look forward to the highest-calibre streaming proposition from March 31.”
Michael Brooks, General Manager WBD Australia and New Zealand, said: “WBD has a long history in Australia, and we know our world-class content from HBO, Warner Bros., Discovery and more is incredibly popular with audiences here. We have a clear strategy to maximise reach through our direct-to-consumer app and distribution partnerships, and our collaboration with Foxtel at launch is a testament to that. We can’t wait for fans across the country to experience Max.”
