Westpac resolves online banking outage

The news: Westpac customers were unable to access their mobile and online services overnight, following an outage that the bank says was caused by a “routine technology update.”

The context: Thousands of customers were unable to access accounts, pay bills or make contactless payments on their phones during the outage which seemed to start between 8pm-9pm Monday evening. Over 10,000 reports of issues were made to DownDetector by around 9pm on Monday.

What they said: In an update posted to X overnight, Westpac said: “Our mobile and online banking services remain unavailable following a routine technology update earlier this evening.”

The bank has not made further clarifications around the cause of the outage, but has posted on its X account that its services are now restored and running as usual.
