The news: Woodside Energy has announced ex-Anglo American executive Anthony (Tony) O’Neill as its new board director.

The context: O’Neill brings mining experience across a variety of commodities and markets working in executive roles centering on sustainability.

He was a key player in Anglo American’s sustainability initiatives as group executive director of technical and sustainability implementing the FutureSmart mining project and its 2040 net zero strategy.

In April, Woodside shareholders voted to re-elect board chair Richard Goyder following public backlash over his perceived inability to enact Woodside’s new energy strategy.

Goyder insisted that Woodside was on track for sustainability targets despite billions of dollars in oil and gas project investments.
