Woodside to develop liquid hydrogen supply chain with Japan Suiso Energy, KEPCO
The news: Woodside has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan Suiso Energy and the Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) to export liquid hydrogen produced from natural gas to Japan from Perth.
The context: The companies will work towards the development of a hydrogen supply chain from Woodside’s proposed H2Perth project that would be located at the Rockingham and Kwinana Industrial Zones in Perth.
The proposed project will produce hydrogen using natural gas as a feedstock and equipped with carbon capture and storage technology.
The project intends to achieve net zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from the start of operations using carbon capture and storage technology as well as carbon credit offsets.
The agreement was exchanged at a ceremony attended by Woodside executive vice president strategy Andy Drummond, Japan Suiso Energy CEO Eiichi Harada and KEPCO executive vice president Satoshi Kuwano.
Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King and Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook also attended the ceremony.
