Woolworths and Coles to review 'complex' court ruling on staff underpayments
The news: Supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles have said they are reviewing today's judgment by the Federal Court, following a class action over the alleged underpayment of salaried managers in their supermarkets.
The context: The class action was instituted in May 2020 and the Fair Work Ombudsman commenced proceedings in December 2021 relating to the alleged underpayment of salaried managers in Woolworths and Coles' supermarkets and the interpretation of the General Retail Industry Award and the Fair Work Act.
Woolworths called the judgment "complex and extensive" and said that any further remediation payments will require an "extensive, detailed review and analysis across many thousands of potentially affected team members."
Woolworths made repayments of more than $330 million to thousands of affected team members impacted between 2013 and 2019.
What they said: "We are focused on resolving these underpayment issues," said Woolworths group CEO Amanda Bardwell.
"We are committed to ensuring that our team members are paid correctly."
