The news: ASX-listed Worley has been awarded an engineering services agreement (ESA) by UK-based power company VPI to support the Humber Zero Carbon Capture project.
The numbers: Worley said that once completed, the project is expected to capture up to 3.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, making it one of the world's largest carbon capture projects for a combined heat and power plant.
The context: Under the ESA, Worley will provide engineering services for the development phase of the Humber Zero Carbon Capture project. The ESA follows Worley's completion of the front end engineering design study in 2023.
The development phase will prepare for the development, construction and delivery of retrofitted post-combustion carbon capture units to VPI's 1.2 gigawatt combined heat and power plant in Immingham, UK.
Worley will provide the services through its offices in London with support from global integrated delivery teams in India.
Humber Zero has two carbon capture projects — at VPI's plant and the Phillips 66 Humber Refinery based in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The projects are part of the Viking CCS Cluster which is targeting to capture up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2030. The two companies expect to invest £2 billion ($3.9 billion) to reach the target.
