Australian media executives had been holding onto hopes that the Albanese government would make progress on plans to force global tech giants to pay for news when the prime minister and his advisors visit the US later this month.
But as things stand, disappointment looms.
In recent weeks, Labor officials have told senior media executives to expect a consultation paper — now more than six months overdue — shortly after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese returns from the US, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.
Media executives had expected the government to use Albanese’s trip to New York for the UN General Assembly to gauge how US President Donald Trump might respond to its policy plans, said one person, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential information.
However, the policy is not currently on Albanese’s agenda for the trip, according to a person familiar with planning, as the prime minister focuses first on securing a meeting with Trump. Albanese declined to comment.
