At a recent online meeting convened by the Tech Council of Australia, it didnโt take long for the highly charged issue of copyright reform to be raised.
โ[We are] concerned that the current focus on copyright reform is too narrow and primarily benefits a small segment of TCA members, creating reputational risk,โ read one question submitted during the meeting, according to a screenshot of it seen by Capital Brief.
โ[We] suggest diversifying the submission beyond just large language model training to include broader government approaches to regulating technology.โ
It was Tech Council chair Scott Farquhar who, a few weeks ago at the National Press Club, suggested Australia should loosen its copyright laws to make it easier for AI platforms to train their models on local shores. The move would potentially pave the way for billions of dollars of investments into local data centres capable of hosting them, the Atlassian billionaire and other proponents of the idea have argued.
