As a wave of criticism poured down on Anthony Albanese over the Bondi terror attack, the prime minister faced demands for both contrition and action. He offered both when he fronted the cameras on Thursday morning.
“More could have always been done. Governments aren’t perfect. I’m not perfect,” he conceded.
The plan he announced includes a crackdown on hate preaching, beefed up powers for the home affairs minister, and the creation of an antisemitism education taskforce.
As the prime minister spoke in parliament, the father of Sunday’s youngest victim — 10-year-old Matilda — was preparing to lay his daughter to rest in Sydney, hours after accusing Albanese of “betraying the Jewish people”.
