A frequent criticism levelled at the Labor Party is that its ranks are dominated by former union bosses and political staffers with no real-world experience, particularly in business.
The criticism is fair, although it is often inflated by Labor’s opponents for obvious political reasons.
Since Labor delivered the 2026 budget nearly two weeks ago, however, the government has struggled to come to grips with the reaction from business, particularly the startup sector to its capital gains tax changes.
The current effort to seek consultation looks a lot like a retrofit by a government that didn’t consider the potential impact of the legislation until too late in the process.
