For a brief, shining moment, it looked like the whirlwind political bromance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk had ended with a whimper, not a bang.
Despite varyingly public disagreements over everything from a massive Republican spending bill to Trump’s tariff policy, Musk ended his formal role in the White House last week without a great deal of noise, outside of some grumbling on the sidelines.

But it didn’t last long. Many were glued to X this morning as the two volcanic personalities fell out in spectacular fashion.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk wrote on his social media platform. “Such ingratitude.” Trump returned serve on his Truth Social account, suggesting that government savings could be found by cancelling lucrative contracts with Musk’s companies. Tesla shares cratered 14% in response.
