Tomorrow morning, Australians will wake up to see how well Anthony Albanese availed himself in his long awaited first meeting in the Oval Office with Donald Trump.
After months of will they or won’t they speculation, it is the most keenly watched meeting between an Australian prime minister and US president in living memory.

As Finn McHugh reported last week for Political Capital, Albanese’s main goal will be modest: to simply emerge on the other side of the meeting unscathed. It’s vanishingly unlikely that he will extract any wins on tariffs or trade.
But if you happen to be in Team Albanese heading into the meeting, there are plenty of reasons to be feeling confident.
