There were rumours throughout the final night of the Democratic National Convention that superstar Beyoncé would perform Freedom, the theme song of Kamala Harris’ campaign.
In the end, Beyoncé’s services weren’t needed on the night Harris became the first Black woman and American of South Asian descent to be nominated for president.
While the DNC wasn’t without celebrities — Pink, The Chicks, Stevie Wonder and John Legend were among those who performed over the four nights — the Democrats seemed to have learnt from previous presidential campaigns when they have been wounded by charges of elitism.
Because if there was a central theme of the convention’s final night – speakers included Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren, Arizona senator Mark Kelly, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, former CIA director Leon Panetta and the vice president’s sister, Maya Harris — it was the “awkward alliance” referred to by former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger.
