Outgoing US President Joe Biden insists Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are locked in a “battle for the very soul of America”. While much of that battle will focus on domestic issues — particularly a tug-of-war over abortion — other elements will have ramifications for Australia.

Both leaders have centred their economic strategies on green energy-driven local manufacturing, and favour traditional alliance systems to counter China and Russia’s revisionist agenda — a stark contrast to Trump’s isolationism.

Delivering the Democratic National Committee’s keynote speech on Tuesday afternoon Australia time, Biden described manufacturing communities overlooked by globalisation as “the first beneficiaries” of clean energy.
“We passed the most significant climate law in the history of mankind. Over $370 billion, cutting carbon emissions in half by 2030,” he said.
