Thank God Anthropic has finally filed for its IPO, narrowly maintaining its position as the one company no one can shut up about in 2026.
It’s a big move, but one with very little substance so far. The company behind Claude has confidentially submitted paperwork to US regulators for its public listing, with the boilerplate caveat that any actual float will depend on “market conditions and other factors”.
In non-lawyer words: we’ll do it when the vibes seem OK.
But the announcement was inevitable. Chief rival OpenAI is preparing its own confidential filing, while SpaceX (with Elon Musk’s xAI stapled awkwardly to the back of it) is expected to price a blockbuster IPO this month at a valuation that could make it the biggest in history.
The first public listing of a frontier AI company will raise more capital for a business that burns through it at astonishing speed. But more importantly, it will set the benchmark for how public markets value the entire sector.
