As the clock winds down on the 2025 parliamentary year, the Albanese government is racing to legislate its controversial streaming quotas amid growing backlash in the US and in Canberra.
With just five sitting days left, Labor is poised to ram the bill through the Senate this week in a move that appears designed to bypass an inquiry and fend off efforts by the Trump administration to privately influence a change of course.
Arts Minister Tony Burke, who has led Labor’s work on the policy since its announcement in early 2022, was expected late on Friday by those involved to turn to the Greens to secure their Senate support.
When asked about the policy going into the weekend, neither opposition arts spokesman Julian Leeser nor Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said whether they would support it.
