Anthony Albanese’s visit to Fiji yesterday could not have been better timed.
As the wheels went up on the government jet on Sunday night, a scandal erupted over comments the prime minister made when he appeared as a guest on a recent NOVA podcast called Bush Deep, hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne.
During the podcast the prime minister was asked to pretend that his six-month marriage to Jodie Haydon had gone “tits up” and, in that circumstance, whether he would prefer to “shag” Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman or Rhonda Burchmore.
Albanese named Minogue, before volunteering aspects of his sex life which, frankly, are best left to the imagination.
Yesterday, amid widespread criticism that he had demeaned his office, Albanese did the right thing and apologised unequivocally.
