Over the past decade, the Federal Court has emerged as the forum of choice for defamation cases. And its most frequent customers are those in showbiz or politics.
Prima Facie pondered this while watching the livestream of Charlotte MacInnes v Rebel Wilson before Justice Elizabeth Raper in Court 21A of the Law Courts Building in Sydney.
All the more so given the last time Wilson was involved in a “defo” trial, it was in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2017, when she successfully sued the magazine Woman’s Day.
MacInnes played the lead role in The Deb, a musical comedy directed by Wilson that is now screening in cinemas. She is upset about Instagram posts by Wilson saying MacInnes told her she had been sexually harassed by one of the film’s producers, Amanda Ghost, only to backtrack for financial or career reasons.
