While critics argue the Coalition’s reversal on net zero is a return to the past, shadow treasurer Ted O’Brien is pitching it as part of his vision for the future.
Since formally ditching its emissions reduction target earlier this month, the Coalition has narrowed in on rising energy prices and cast Labor’s economic management as reckless.
In his first National Press Club address on Wednesday, O’Brien linked the policy shift to AI, which he described as the “most profound economic transformation since the advent of the internet”.
“AI leadership in South East Asia is up for grabs, and we should take it,” he declared.
