When you are starting a publication for decision makers in the new Australian economy, there are few better people to speak to for your launch edition than the federal treasurer.
Our economics correspondent Jennifer Duke sat down with Jim Chalmers in the Commonwealth Parliament Offices in Sydney, a stone's throw away from Capital Brief HQ, a little while ago. You may not agree with everything Chalmers says, but it's a fascinating interview that tells you a lot about how he views the economy and his role in it.
The last time Chalmers spoke with such candour it caused a mini-uproar. In today’s interview, he pointedly rails against the “old school 1980s Cold War tussle” that still pervades economic discourse in Australia.
He also notes that his rhetoric around values-based capitalism has been well received by large sections of the business and investor communities (where adherence to ESG principles has become orthodox).
