Labor is preparing to unveil fresh details about its approach to enforcing the teen social media ban, in a move which could derail an eleventh-hour lobbying effort by major platforms to water down the regulation.
Communications Minister Anika Wells is set to make the announcement within a fortnight, according to a person familiar with the plan. It follows a series of private meetings last week between the minister, the eSafety Commissioner and the platforms.
While the contents of the announcement remain unknown, it is increasingly expected to address ongoing uncertainty about which platforms will be immediately captured by the world-first laws by formally listing — or “designating” — them by name.
Wells declined to comment.
In a statement in July, Wells said all online services that fall under the definition of an “age-restricted social media platform”, and are not excluded in the rules, will be subject to the world-first ban, which is set to come into effect from 10 December.
