Vance made his name with the 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy and was once one of the staunchest critics of Trump, calling him an “idiot”. But he managed to win over the former president after spending two years endorsing his false claims that the last election was stolen.
A former venture capitalist, Vance counts prominent Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel among his key backers. His selection as Trump's running mate was also welcomed by Elon Musk, who described it as an "excellent decision", shortly before The Wall Street Journal reported that the Tesla CEO has said he plans to commit around $45 million a month to a pro-Trump super PAC.
