Days after the Nationals ditched their commitment to net zero, moderate Liberals were left strolling the press gallery corridors, putting on a brave face.
With their own party yet to settle on a position, they had little choice but to argue the minutiae. Their junior Coalition partner technically remains committed to the Paris Agreement — just not to net zero.
“Let's face it, net zero is becoming a euphemism for whether you believe in climate change or not. That’s crazy,” moderate Liberal Jane Hume told reporters.
Despite the denials of Nationals leader David Littleproud, the decision piles pressure on Liberal leader Sussan Ley to scrap her party’s own commitment.
