Mastercard says it has ushered in the agentic ecommerce era in Australia after processing the country’s first authenticated agentic transactions, with AI-powered bots autonomously buying movie tickets and booking holiday accommodation.

The transactions were completed in partnership with Commonwealth Bank and Westpac. Mastercard product and solutions lead Surin Fernando said the result put Australia at the global forefront of agentic retail, which many expect will become the future of shopping.

“We wanted to prove that Australia really is at the leading edge of this,” Fernando told Capital Brief. “To be able to demonstrate that we can do this, and could do it at scale, is really, really exciting.”

Australia is the third country where Mastercard has run these transactions, following the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
