Christian Porter breaks Bret Walker's High Court streak
The former Commonwealth attorney-general returns to Canberra as a High Court advocate, while the leader of the pack shows his versatility.
Bret Walker SC has long been the busiest advocate in the High Court, but his recent run of cases suggests there’s barely room for anyone else to appear before the nation’s top court.
There have been three appeals in the November sittings so far, and the Sydney silk has appeared in all of them — making for four straight days at the lectern.
His streak will be broken on Wednesday, when Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska challenges sanctions and travel bans imposed by the Australian government after the invasion of Ukraine, with former attorney-general Christian Porter in his corner.
Porter argued the case at trial but Noel Hutley SC — who works out of the same chambers as Walker, 5 St James’ Hall — will be lead counsel in the High Court.
