Defence needs a startup mindset, says Go1 founder Vu Tran

After departing the $3.5 billion edtech firm, Tran joined Black Sky Industries to help reduce Australia’s reliance on US defence giants.

Vu Tran explained his transition from edtech to defence tech at Blackbird Sunrise. Capital Brief.

After building an edtech company worth $3.5 billion, Vu Tran is now fully committed to his unlikely next mission — weaning Australia off its military reliance on the United States.

Though declining to comment on Donald Trump’s commitment to allies, Tran said it poses a national defence risk to depend entirely on American companies. He hopes his new venture, Black Sky Industries, will be part of the solution.

“Hoping the US will always be there is not really a strategy,” Tran told Capital Brief on the sidelines of Blackbird’s Sunrise startup conference.

“Can we control what the US government policy is, regardless of who’s in government? No. What we can control is our policies as a country, our budgets and what we invest our time and money into.”
