High fuel prices drive near doubling in EV sales

Electric vehicles sales have been steadily growing in Australia but figures for March suggest the Middle East War is convincing more Australians to make the switch.

Sales of electric vehicles nearly doubled in percentage terms in March, reaching their highest level on record as buyers responded to uncertainty surrounding the global energy crisis.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reported on Tuesday that Australians bought 15,839 electric vehicles in March, accounting for 14.6% of the nation’s total of 105,058 car sales (which were down 3.3% overall).

In March 2025, EVs accounted for 7.5% of car sales.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said the industry welcomed the extra sales, but it was unclear whether they would be sustained.

“It is too early to determine whether this represents a structural shift in the market,” Weber said.
