How Macquarie Group's Ric Deverell went from canning peas to analysing the global energy transition
Ric Deverell spent the first half of his career as a public servant, and this has left him alert to the grey areas of economic policy challenges.
There is a plaque on the wall of the Reserve Bank’s headquarters in Sydney’s Martin Place that reminds people passing by that the central bank has a duty to promote the economic welfare of Australians.
Ric Deverell, now chief economist and head of net zero for Macquarie Group, spent several years working at the RBA and this message stood out for him.
“That's always stuck with me,” he says. “It's an incredibly useful discipline to help you think about how economies work. Ultimately, you have to remember it’s about people.”
Deverell sees good economic policy as a combination of strong wealth creation and fair distribution. This, he says, helps promote economic wellbeing and growth.
