Joe Biden's Oval Office warning on the twin threats of Hamas and Russia
The US President warned the world is at an historic inflection point. And he is seeking to navigate a gridlocked Congress by tying the two threats together.
United States President Joe Biden said the world stood at an inflection point in history and appealed to Americans to support funding for both Israel and Ukraine’s war efforts, in a rare prime-time address from the Oval Office that layered Hamas and Russia as twin threats to democracy.
Biden said American leadership remained a “beacon to the world” and that the urgent funding he would seek from Congress represented “a smart investment” that would fortify the US-led global order and pay dividends for national and global security.
“Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: They both want to annihilate a neighbouring democracy,” Biden said, in only his second Oval Office address as president.
The United Nations and world leaders are pushing to get aid flowing into Gaza and for a humanitarian corridor to allow safe passage for civilians fleeing the densely-populated strip’s northern front. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told troops on Wednesday that they would soon see Gaza “from within,” in the latest sign that a ground operation is imminent.
