Katy Perry sued a girl — and she didn't like it
The Katy Perry v Katie Perry legal battle is “a rare and valuable opportunity” for the High Court to resolve important questions about reputation and trademarks.
The final round of Katie Perry v Katy Perry trade mark battle will play out in the High Court on Tuesday — and it’s no exaggeration to say the world will be watching.
The two Perrys have been at it since 2008, when Perry the singer (real name Katheryn Hudson) sought to block Perry the designer (Katie Taylor) from registering the trademark “Katie Perry” (her maiden/birth name) in the clothes category.
They let it rest for over a decade, until Perry the designer hit singer Perry the singer with a trademark infringement notice as she planned her 2020 global tour.
The designer won at trial in 2023, but lost on appeal in 2024 - when the Full Federal Court also ruled her original mark should not have been registered.
