One of the world’s top VCs and several Australian startup founders have praised outgoing Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar for helping create the country's first technology giant and putting the local tech ecosystem on the global map.

Farquhar on Friday announced as part of Atlassian's quarterly earnings update that he would step down as co-CEO of the company after 23 years in the role.

During that period, Farquhar and his university friend Mike Cannon-Brookes have grown Atlassian from a scrappy Sydney start-up into a USD51 billion ($76 billion) global technology company with thousands of blue chip customers and 11,000 employees around the world.

San Francisco-based Accel partner Rich Wong, who sits on the board at Atlassian and was one of the company’s early investors, told Capital Brief that Farquhar’s work in creating Atlassian and leading the company for 23+ years was a “legendary run”.
