Leonardo.Ai shrugs off threat from ChatGPT’s new image tools
Founder JJ Fiasson broke down the tech behind OpenAI’s new model — and hints similar features are on the way for Leonardo.Ai and Canva.
The founder of Leonardo.Ai has shrugged off the impact of OpenAI’s new image-generation capabilities, suggesting similar features will soon appear in Canva and Leonardo.Ai.
The new image-generation model, available in ChatGPT, can accurately render text, create photorealistic images and follow intricate prompts. It went viral last week for its ability to transform photos into artwork in the iconic style of animators like Pixar and Studio Ghibli.
“Every time something new comes out there’s this ‘oh shit, what’s that?” said founder JJ Fiasson, now a Canva employee after the Australian unicorn acquired Leonardo.Ai last year. “It's not so much ‘oh shit’ out of fear, it’s ‘oh shit, that's cool’, because it's always something you can add in and include within the product.”
Fiasson acknowledged the model has a number of impressive features. ChatGPT can now render text with high accuracy — such as signage — which has long been a challenge for generative models. It also responds to prompts with far greater precision.
