Nine Entertainment’s newly appointed chair Catherine West pressured one of the company’s own newspapers to amend a column that speculated over how she voted in a board meeting in the lead up to former chief executive Hugh Marks’ departure.

The dispute over the column — details of which are contested — has raised fresh questions in media industry circles about West’s suitability for the high profile role at the helm of the nation’s largest domestic media company, which owns of some of the country’s oldest mastheads.

West was chosen to succeed Peter Costello as Nine chair after the former federal treasurer resigned from the role late on Sunday following an altercation with a News Corp journalist at Canberra airport last week.

West was previously deputy chair, but her elevation has still raised eyebrows in media industry circles.
