Procreate founder James Cuda doubles down on his criticism of 'overhyped' generative AI
The Australian founder behind one of the iPad's most popular paid apps says his team doesn’t “jam” new tech into its products “for the sake of it".
Over the past two years, generative AI has been hailed as a revolutionary technology set to usher in the next industrial revolution. The founder of Australia's Procreate — which makes an iPad app competing with Adobe for creative professionals — isn’t so sure.
James Cuda last week pledged on social media not to integrate generative AI into the app, which was developed in Tasmania and is used by millions of designers. “I really f--king hate generative AI,” he said in a short clip posted to Procreate’s X account last week, labelling the technology harmful to creatives.
The post spread widely on social media, inviting strong agreement from generative AI sceptics and pushback from advocates. His comments were covered in international tech publications like The Verge and TechCrunch.
Cuda told Capital Brief that he doesn’t expect his moral stand to have a significant impact on his business.
