PsiQuantum on Thursday unveiled a quantum chip it claims is more advanced than recent technologies demonstrated by Microsoft and Google.

Microsoft generated buzz last week when it announced a new type of processor for quantum computers. But Geoff Pryde, PsiQuantum Australia’s chief technical director, says the company’s Omega chip is significantly further along.

"Microsoft have got a very serious team of hard-working people who are doing interesting physics," said Pryde told Capital Brief. "But the thing about PsiQuantum is, we were putting two qubits on a chip in the mid-2000s."

The California-based company received a $940 million investment from the Federal and Queensland governments last year to help build the world’s first commercially useful quantum computer in Brisbane. PsiQuantum says the machine will be running by the end of 2027.
