After a busy week of economic data and debate, the focus shifts to RBA chief economist Sarah Hunter.

After a tense week in which Treasurer Jim Chalmers faced accusations of attacking the Reserve Bank for “smashing the economy” with higher interest rates ahead of the release of GDP data, there is much less data for the week ahead. But there will continue to be a focus on how the central bank characterises economic conditions and how this compares to government statements.

Here’s what you need to know about the key economic data releases this week.

New numbers

The data: Total Value of Dwellings June quarter, Australian Bureau of Statistics

When: Tuesday 10th September 2024

What to expect: In the March quarter, the total value of residential dwellings increased by $209.4 billion, with an extra 52,700 homes. The mean price was $959,300, up $14,300 on the prior quarter. Expect all these figures to rise. While recent CoreLogic data shows the market is finally turning in some cities, prices were still rising relatively quickly at the time of this particular measurement.

More to watch: Building approvals are also due out from the ABS on Monday.
