Telstra’s longest serving CEO has arrived as Sharon AI’s chair with a stamp of approval, shrugging off criticisms about the firm in an interview with Capital Brief.

Andy Penn may’ve stepped out of the spotlight since he vacated the CEO role at Telstra in 2022 but now, he told Capital Brief while phoning from Bangkok, there’s no point trying to hide from the AI boom or shy away from a highly scrutinised company like Sharon AI.

“I think my whole life has been highly scrutinised. I haven’t been able to necessarily try to attract that or avoid that,” Penn told Capital Brief after his appointment as chair of the neocloud was announced.

“I like to work on things where ... I’m passionate about the industry, the sector and things I think I can make an impact and make a difference on.”

The advent of the AI age has caused great consternation among the global commentariat who have vacillated between armageddon and utopian scenarios both on the possibility of the tools and the impacts of the massive infrastructure build out.
