Streaming platforms set to be captured by Labor's gambling ad curbs

Amazon Prime Video and Optus Sport are among the services expected to face similar, if not tougher gambling ad restrictions than TV broadcasters as the government moves to quell a backlash.

Streaming platforms are expected to face the same, if not tougher gambling ad restrictions than the caps proposed to broadcasters two weeks ago. Sipa USA.

The Labor government is finalising plans to restrict gambling advertising on streaming services amid a continued backlash over its watered down plans to reform betting on live sport.

Streaming services which air sport such as Amazon’s Prime Video and Optus Sport are now expected to face similar restrictions to their broadcast counterparts, industry sources told Capital Brief, following confidential talks over the past fortnight.

The government continues to consult with media companies about curbs on gambling advertising before its highly contested reforms go to cabinet within the next month. Labor’s package will likely fall short of the sweeping reforms recommended by a cross-party committee chaired by the late MP, Peta Murphy, which recommended a total ban on gambling advertising on television.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office has become more involved in the process over the past week amid growing backbench angst over Communications Minister Michelle Rowland’s softened proposal.
