Sussan Ley sets net zero timeline as moderates fear capitulation
Sussan Ley has called for Liberal MPs to return to Canberra next week to bring the issue to a head.
The Liberals will decide their stance on net zero emissions by 2050 in the middle of next week, before the party attempts to broker a deal with the Nationals by next weekend.
Climate change has emerged as the most divisive topic in the Coalition party room, after the Nationals abandoned the target and as moderate Liberals attempt to stave off a push from their conservative colleagues to follow suit.
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley is scrambling to unite the warring factions, amid mounting speculation that her leadership is in jeopardy. The issue has raised the spectre of a second Coalition split in six months, after the Nationals formally walked away from the target last week.
Some moderate Liberals fear she will abandon the target in a bid to save her leadership.
