Ever since the teal wave took her to Parliament in 2022, Allegra Spender has been calling for a frank conversation on tax reform. Now the independent member for Wentworth in Sydney’s wealthy eastern suburbs hopes the door has finally opened.

Labor’s stage 3 reversal is being begrudgingly waved through by the Coalition, but backbenchers already want the move to be a catalyst for a long-term taxation rethink.

“[And] it's impossible for the Labor Party not to bring the agenda on tax, because they won't be believed if they say nothing,” Spender tells Capital Brief.
