ACCR to appeal Federal Court judgment on Santos ruling

The news: The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR) has appealed the Federal Court’s decision in relation to the centre’s greenwashing case against Santos.

The context: This follows Justice Brigitte Markovic’s finding that Santos’ claims about decarbonisation were not misleading in a landmark ‘greenwashing’ lawsuit first brought by the advocacy group in 2021.

What they said: “In our view, the judgment sets the bar for corporate communication about climate commitments well below market and investor expectations,” ACCR CEO Brynn O’Brien said.

“We think it increases the burden on investors to interrogate the full context in which claims are made, and the assumptions, uncertainties, and emerging technologies that may underpin them,” he added.
