Advanced Navigation appoints first head of global defence
The news: Western Australia startup Advanced Navigation has hired former US Army captain Wayne Prender as its global head of defence.
The context: Prior to his appointment, Prender spent over 11 years at Textron, a Texas-based company that makes machines, vehicles and parts for defence and aerospace organisations.
Advanced Navigation develops navigation technology that guides machines like drones or aircraft in locations that GPS does not reach.
The company raised $108 million in 2022, and as founder Chris Shaw told Capital Brief last month is now focused on international expansion.
Shaw noted the company intends to expand the US team from around five to 20.
Advanced Navigation's customers include NASA, Tesla and Lockheed Martin. Prender's appointment is an attempt to push further into government defence organisations.
What they said: “In today’s global defence market, having cutting-edge APNT [Assured Position, Navigation and Timing] solutions is mission-critical," Prender said.
"The disruptive solutions that Advanced Navigation designs and delivers at speed provide the situational awareness warfighters need to act quickly and decisively, especially when traditional forms of navigation are unavailable.
"Not only does this intelligence minimise the risk of disorientation and reduce mission delays, it also ensures that mission objectives can be achieved with increased precision, survivability and effectiveness.
"I look forward to joining the team and bringing these vital capabilities to a global stage, as we work to bolster the defence mechanisms of our allied nations.”
