The news: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for calm political discourse following the arrest of a 27-year-old Sydney tradesman who allegedly threatened to kidnap him.

The context: The Australian Federal Police arrested and charged the man on Sunday with using a carriage service to threaten serious harm after a forensic examination of his electronic devices obtained through a search warrant.

Albanese said Australia needs civil political debate and reflected on ASIO director-general's public warnings about lowering the temperature of political discourse.

He emphasised that while political engagement should be encouraged, particularly among young people, it must remain respectful to enable open debate. The prime minister placed responsibility on both public officeholders and the media to engage respectfully.

What they said: “The director-general of ASIO has made this very clear publicly that we need to lower the temperature of political debate," Albanese said. "And there is a responsibility on both public office holders, a responsibility upon people in the media as well, to engage in a way that they would like to see themselves spoken about.

“I’m all for political engagement. I encourage people to engage, particularly young people, to engage in political discourse because in a democracy, participation is an essential component. But it does need to be respectful because otherwise you have issues that make it difficult to have that open debate.”
