Anthropic raises $5.6b as valuation triples
The news: Anthropic has raised USD3.5 billion ($5.6 billion) in a new funding round that values the company at USD61.5 billion, tripling its 2023 valuation.
The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, which invested USD1 billion, alongside Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity, General Catalyst, Jane Street and Salesforce Ventures.
Existing investors Menlo Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners also participated.
The context: Anthropic said it will use the funding to develop the next generation of its AI systems, expand computing capacity, further research efforts, and expand internationally.
The company, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, has positioned itself as a safety-conscious AI developer.
Bloomberg reported the company’s annual revenue run rate has increased by 30% this year from about USD1 billion last year.
The round was oversubscribed, reflecting continued investor enthusiasm for AI despite growing competition, including from China’s DeepSeek.
Anthropic’s Claude models are among the most capable AI models, competing with OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s Gemini and Meta’s Llama.
