Anthropic’s valuation surpasses OpenAI after fresh funding round
The news: Anthropic has raised USD65 billion ($90 billion) in a funding round led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greennoaks and Sequoia Capital that valued the Claude maker at USD965 billion. Each of the lead investors contributed more than USD2 billion.
The context: The new valuation, following Thursday’s Series H funding round, puts Anthropic ahead of rival OpenAI, which was last valued at USD852 billion post-money in March, intensifying competition for leadership in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
Anthropic’s valuation has more than doubled from USD380 billion in February, reflecting its rapid rise as a leading AI developer and strong investor appetite for frontier AI companies.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI are expected to tap the public market, potentially as early as this year, to secure the computing resources needed to support services and train new models. However, Anthropic has faced capacity constraints in recent months, forcing it to institute usage limits during peak hours and encouraging customers to shift workloads to off-peak hours by offering additional compute capacity.
Anthropic expects to generate USD10.9 billion in revenue in the second quarter, more than doubling from the previous quarter, as demand for its AI software accelerates. Its annualised revenue run rate is projected to exceed USD50 billion by the end of next month, Bloomberg reported.
