Buildkite founder and CEO exits without explanation
The news: Founder and CEO of Buildkite, Keith Pitt, will step down as CEO, according to an update from the company shared Monday.
The context: Beyond labelling the move as a ‘Leadership Transition,’ the company did not provide any explanation behind Pitt’s exit, nor did it announce the appointment of a permanent successor. Buildkite said that its chairman, Barry Crist, will act as interim CEO until a permanent leader is appointment.
In the statement released by the company, Crist thanked Pitt for his contributions and noted that the transition is a part of the normal lifecycle of a technology company. “Keith had defied all odds to create and bootstrap one of the most interesting technology companies in Australia and one of the most trusted names of developer tools in the world.”
The software delivery platform was valued at $200 million in 2020, with investors including General Catalyst and Airtree Ventures.
Pitt’s resignation comes amid reports of employee dissatisfaction at Buildkite, with a slate of executives jumping ship over the past year. Glassdoor reviews of the company also suggest general disquiet with leadership at the company.
Buildkite’s Monday release also announced the appointment of James Wilson as chief technology officer. Wilson has 20 years of experience in software and network engineering in Australia and the US, including senior software engineering leadership roles at Apple and Amazon Web Services.
