The news: The Albanese government has appointed British central banker Andrew Hauser as the Reserve Bank's deputy governor. The news came amongst a raft of RBA reforms announced by the government.

The numbers: Hauser is a Bank of England veteran of more than three decades, and is currently its executive director of the markets directorate, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement. He has also served on the executive board of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and is expected to begin early next year.

The context: Hauser played a key role in BoE's response to former British prime minister Liz Truss' disastrous mini-budget in September 2022, the Australian Financial Review reports, which led to the pound falling to a record low and contributed to Truss becoming Britain's shortest-serving PM.

What they said: "The Government is confident Mr Hauser has the skills and experience required to help the RBA navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain economic environment," Chalmers said in a statement.
