The news: Parts of the web have been brought down by an outage at Cloudflare, with thousands of users of key social media sites flagging connection issues.

The context: DownDetector shows that users of X, Facebook, Spotify, Canva and OpenAI have reported issues connecting to the sites.

Many large platforms have their servers hosted on Cloudflare, which offers tools that protect websites from cyberattacks and allow sites to load content more quickly. Cloudflare also acts as a domain name server.

An update published by Cloudflare around 10:50pm AEDT said: "Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing. We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly."

The company added: "We are seeing services recover, but customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts."

In late October, Amazon Web Services suffered a major outage which brought down large portions of the internet for several hours.
