Coronado Global Resources appoints CFO Barrie van der Merwe as new CEO

The news: Coal miner Coronado Global Resources has appointed its chief financial officer Barrie J van der Merwe as its new chief executive officer and managing director, effective 1 August 2026.

The context: Van der Merwe has been CFO since 2025 and has more than three decades of experience in the mining industry including as chief financial officer of Evolution Mining and as a vice president at Orica.

Van der Merwe replaces interim CEO Gerry Spindler who has been filling the role after Douglas Thompson stepped down at the end of March before joining Jellinbah Group in May as CEO. The interim CFO will be Sandeep Deoji from 1 August 2026.

What they said: “Barrie has made a significant contribution to Coronado during his tenure as CFO and understands our operations, customers, shareholders, and changes required in the business very well,” chair Greg Pritchard said.

Spindler said: “I am pleased to hand leadership of Coronado to Barrie. Having worked closely with him, I have seen first-hand his leadership capability, commercial acumen and commitment to our people and our business”.
